I work with teenage girls daily. Here are signs we dismiss as "just a phase" but are actually cries for help:
- Always locked in her room = Withdrawal, not privacy
- Lost interest in things she loved = Emotional overload, not mood swings
- Snaps at small corrections = Inner pain, not attitude
- Overly sensitive to comments = Shaky self-worth, not being "soft"
- Says "I'm fine" but energy is off = Emotional shutdown, not independence
- Talks freely with friends, silent at home = She feels unsafe at home
- Constantly on phone late at night = Escapism, not social media addiction
- Avoids family meals/gatherings = Emotional disconnection, not "growing up"
- Extremely defensive/argumentative = Feels criticized & unseen, not just hormones
- Confidence dropping but pretends she's okay = Silent cry for help, not a phase
WHEN IGNORED:
- Silence becomes distance
- Moodiness becomes rebellion
- Low self-esteem becomes risky behavior
- The unseen 14-year-old becomes the voiceless 18-year-old
Your daughter isn't being difficult. She's drowning and signaling for help.
Check on your girls. They're good kids who just want to be seen.
